In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

music video:  

With our media product being a rock song we tried mostly to conform to the usual codes and conventions of the rock genre. This however is not to say that we did not have any subvert to the usual stereotypical rock song.

CONFORMING:

Acting:

One way we conformed to the typical rock genre is with the acting and how the band is known to show emotion while playing the music. This is usually shown with them shouting lyrics to make the song come over with more powerful emotion. We decided to use this within our video in order to represent the hobos feeling at the beginning of the song.

Hairstyle:

Another way in which we conformed to the usual sum41 rock image would be the hairstyle. This was useful to us as the wig we used for the hobo can also be portrayed as a crazy rock/punk hairstyle which is common within most rock bands.

Narrative:

Another way in which the video conforms to the codes and conventions of the genre is the narrative of the song and how the narrative will be portrayed within the video by cutting towards actual use of the instruments and also the story narrative. We also decided to keep this with how the hobo will be running in order to show the story narrative however near the end it also cuts to the band playing instruments along with the song in order to stick to the codes and conventions.

SUBVERTING:

Although we tried to make most of our music video to conform to the general codes and conventions of a rock video there were some parts in which we subverted instead. These would include the editing and the storyline and how the flashback was used.

Storyline:

One way in which we subverted was with the use of the flashback within the storyline. Most rock videos tend to focus on the present however with ours we decided to add in a flashback scene in order to enhance the idea that he was a normal person who then fell and then in the present was rising up again.

Editing:

Although we tried to make the editing follow the way in which a rock video would be used the ways in which it subverts would firstly be how it feels that there are too many edited shots such as the negative view at the beginning and the stoplights at the end. The main way however the editing subverts would be by how the flashback scene makes the video seem to slow down halfway through. This subverts as most rock videos get faster as the video progresses however we feel that due to it being a calm peaceful flashback this makes up for it.

We tried to make the website conform with the typical style of most rock band websites. for this we used examples from the sum41 band website aswelll as other rock band websites such as the greenday website, the blink 182 website  and the offspring website.
these gave us good ideas as to what to include for our website such as a image/gallery page, infomation about the band and the members and also a history of their previous releases.
Due to wanting to conform to the offical sum41 website as much as possible we styled our website similar to that of the current website which due to the release of thier new album it was related to their new album 'screaming bloody murder' which overall made the website styled in dark colours such as red, black and grey.
Trying to conform with this we styled our webpage with the same colours in order to makes our look as sum41 authentic as possible.

subverting:
Due to us trying to make it as official looking as possible not much was made in terms of subverting from the ideas of the official website.
We felt however that this was acceptable as the closer it looked toward to official website then the more convincing it would seem that it was a site intended for the real sum41 and they would approve of the site.
Some key differences between the sites firstly was the animation within the website, an example of this being how the pictures on our site flowed and were able to be seen in a control your own slideshow kind of style while the official website simply has images of recent tours and concerts on their media page.
Another change being us adding in information as to all their previous albums, we felt that this would be useful if it was an official website as new fans who were browsing the site for information on the band could then find out quick and simple information on some of the bands previous work

As we were constructing the website and digi-pack at the same time we were looking and researching sum41's previous albums while constructing idea of our own for our digi-pack.
we decided that as with our website we wanted it to follow the same themem that the current band had and so basing our idea off their newest album 'screaming bloody murder' we decided to go for a dark theme with the CD cover shwoing a faded out grim reaper and the inside covers having a touch of blood themem within the images. this relating specifically back to their most recent album in order to make it seem that this could possibly be simply thier next album.

Subverting:

As with the website we decided to go more towards the conforming side with the Digi-pack due to wanting to make it seem as official as possible. the only significant changes we added was the use of the grim reaper which with some of the made up song choices (such as bad dawn, reapers for paradise and blood in my eye) we thought it fit in well with the image of the band being a hardcore american punk group.

Apart from this however we mostly conformed with the use of dark colors and blood to give it a dark reaper like effect.
